In this example, the cooperative social schema embedded in Mandarin Chinese and the language of the biological community clearly provides a resource for Yang to analyze the horses’ locomotive patterns, movements, and interactions in ways that differ from those chosen by English and German speaking and writing scientists. This resource is a schema, in the Kantian sense (Kant 2007, 176) by which ideas and understanding become associated with sense perceptions. To borrow and extend Kant, schema allow scientists, building on their different native languages, to analytically break down the otherwise continuous locomotive patterns, movement, and interactions of animals and attribute different conceptual meanings to them. In the next section, I explore one of Dr. Yang’s students and his related concept of “gathering behavior.”
